KUALA LUMPUR, 20 DECEMBER 2023 – Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) today welcomes the appointment of Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Hussain as its new chairman, effective 20 December 2023.

Tuan Syed Hamadah Syed Othman, TH Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer said, “TH welcomes the appointment and is grateful to receive a respected and experienced corporate figure who was also the founder of RHB Group, one of the biggest banking groups in the country. We are confident that our collective effort to strengthen TH will continue with his experience and leadership”.

The appointment of Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Hussain is also expected to strengthen TH further to become an Islamic institution respected for its performance and governance, in line with its mandate to enable Malaysian muslims to save for the hajj pilgrimage.

Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Hussain established Rashid Hussain Securities Sdn Bhd, a stockbroking company, in 1983 and built it to become RHB Group, one of the largest integrated financial services groups in Malaysia.

He also served as a Board Member and Chairman of the Executive Committee of Khazanah Nasional Berhad from 1994 until 1998. Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Hussain was also Chairman of Putrajaya Holdings from 1995 until the year 2000.

Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Hussain was also one of six members appointed by Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong for the Tabung Haji Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI). The Royal Commission of Inquiry Report on Lembaga Tabung Haji’s Management and Operational Issues from 2014 until 2020 has been presented to DYMM Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di- Pertuan Agong and the Government.

Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Hussain is also a Member of the Board of Governors for the International Islamic University Malaysia. He received the Tokoh Maulidur Rasul SAW Award for Wilayah Persekutuan in 2023.

TH would also like to extend its deepest gratitude to Tan Sri Azman Hj Mokhtar for his invaluable service and leadership. Since his appointment as chairman on 20 December 2021, he contributed towards strengthening TH’s financial position with total deposits of RM88.9 billion as at 30 November 2023, an increase of almost 7 per cent against RM83.3 billion as at 1 January 2022.

Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Hussain records his sincere appreciation to the Government for its trust and confidence in him to lead a key Islamic institution, especially to strengthen TH in its efforts to further raise savings that are government guaranteed, syariah compliant, zakat paid for depositors, as well as to improve the hajj management services.

He also adds that TH must continue strengthening its financial position to ensure the sustainability of the institution. May Allah SWT provide His blessing for these endeavours with support from all stakeholders.
